چکیده

We model the annihilation of relic positrons produced in a gamma-ray burst (GRB) after its afterglow has faded. We find that the annihilation signal from at least one GRB remnant in the Milky Way galaxy should be observable with future space missions such as INTEGRAL and EXIST, provided that the gas surrounding the GRB source has the typical density of the interstellar medium, ∼< 1 cm . Three fortunate circumstances conspire to make the signal observable. First, unlike positrons in a standard supernova, the GRB positrons initially travel at a relativistic speed and remain ahead of any nonrelativistic ejecta until the ejecta become rarefied and the annihilation time becomes long. Second, the GRB remnant remains sufficiently hot (T ∼> 5 × 10 5 K) for a strong annihilation line to form without significant smearing by three-photon decay of positronium. Third, the annihilation signal persists over a time longer than the average period between GRB events in the Milky Way galaxy. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts – supernova remnants – X-rays: ISM

Annihilation Gamma Ray Background Characterization and Rejection for a Positron Camera

We have developed a miniature (1.2 cm2) beta-ray camera prototype to assist a surgeon in locating and removing the margins of a resected tumor. When imaging positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals, annihilation gamma ray interactions in the detector can mimic those of the betas. The extent of the background contamination depends on the detector, geometry and tumor specificity of the radiopharmac...

Annihilation y Ray Background Characterization and Rejection for a Small Beta Camera Used for Tumor Localization During Surgery

We have developed a miniature (1.2 cm2) beta-ray camera prototype to assist a surgeon in locating the margins of a resected tumor. With this technique, one directly detects betas emitted from exposed radio-labeled tissue. When imaging positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals, annihilation gamma ray interactions in the detector can mimic those of the betas. The extent of the background contaminati...

Identifying Gamma-Ray Burst Remnants in Nearby Galaxies

We study the spectral signatures arising from cooling and recombination of an interstellar medium whose equilibrium state has been altered over ∼ 100 pc by the radiation of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) and its afterglow. We identify signatures in the line diagnostics which are indicative of a photo-ionized GRB remnant which is ∼< 5 × 10 4 years old . We estimate that at least a few such remnants sho...

An Experimental Search for Gamma Radiation Associated . With Thunderstorm Activity*

This eZp&iment is a repeat of an earlier experiment,’ but with more sensitive appaTatus and in a location with a higher incidence of thunderstorm activity. The experiment of Ref. Hypernova and Gamma-ray Burst Remnants as Tev Unidentified Sources

We investigate hypernova (hyper-energetic supernova) and gamma-ray burst (GRB) remnants in our Galaxy as TeV gamma-ray sources, particularly in the role of potential TeV unidentified sources, which have no clear counterpart at other wavelengths. We show that the observed bright sources in the TeV sky could be dominated by GRB/hypernova remnants, even though they are fewer than supernova remnant...
